A remarkable debut release, which was very much a sign of things to come. The template of classic Chicago house music (primarily, "It's Time for the Percolator" by Cajmere) was used with the addition of sexual lyrics.[1] It has usually been made on minimal equipment with little or no effects. Mitchell has a collaborative project with the Night Slugs boss in the works and recently finished a remix for Ed Banger’s forthcoming 10th anniversary release. The track is prototypical ghetto house, and while Mitchell helped spawn the genre, his story doesn’t end there.

This enabled prosperous Black families — forced to live in areas primarily surrounding Central Avenue — to move into neighborhoods with amenities and opportunities they had until recently been denied. The completion of the towering 19-acre Baldwin Hills Reservoir in 1951 only accelerated development, with many young families, professors and business owners moving into the sprawling one-story ranch and modern homes proliferating in the hills. One of the questions that I’ve been asked is whether things on this tour are put on for tourists, with the gangster aspect being over-hyped or if it’s genuine. The people who run this tour all grew up in the hood, and James was a great guide.

In either case, the aim is the same – to show people the hood as the guide knows it, and teach everyone on the tour something new. "Once I heard electronic dance music, there wasn't no other music to listen to. There was nothing else. My mind was just focused on that." We met up with the ghetto house legend for a candid chat on the kind of drizzly afternoon that Deeon claims to love. Mitchell continued to release music in the 90s, but thanks to a veritable explosion in vinyl reissues, his work is seeing even more interest than ever. According to the Los Angeles Times, by 1971, 4,000 of View Park’s 5,795 residents had moved out of the neighborhood. But the people of the Baldwin Hills built their neighborhoods back relatively quickly, recovering from the catastrophe. The rolling hills in South Los Angeles that now hosts these neighborhoods were once part of the Rancho La Cienega o Paso de la Tijera, eventually owned by the randy, wily 19th century L.A. Greenleaf was infamous for being where people would dispose of murdered bodies, but in recent years rejuvenation attempts have occurred to clean up the area. One of the most surprising things I saw driving down Greenleaf, was a man riding his horse down the street, although it turns out it’s not as uncommon as you might think.

This is different than suburban development, which features large houses next to each other, little-to-no public transportation, and busy roads. Many people refer to the South and West sides of LA as being within the ghettos due to their high crime rates and poverty levels. However, it seems that these areas are becoming increasingly urbanized. Gina Fields, the Chair of the Empowerment Congress West Area Neighborhood Council, worries that the area’s Black Angelenos who can live within a majority Black community has shrunk.
Some people have a good grip on it, a good interpretation of it, but a lot of people are just re-editing old records. African house, so-called "soulful house" is big in Chicago. I don't think they've got the soulful part down yet.

I’ve been listening to house since I bought Chicago DJ Mix Tape Demos from a cell phone accessories store in 1995 in Madison, WI. The guy would drive down to Chicago and pick up stuff and drive back. We would go buy them on a Friday and then listen to them all weekend. After ceasing operations around the turn of the millennium, the label celebrated return to the market in 2013 after a revived interest of its '90s released records. This release arrived as the first of a few compilations of DJ Deeon’s earliest and most memorable works. Another edition, ‘Sampler 3’ was released the following year.
But the Baldwin Hills, like much of South Los Angeles, face a new challenge, as more and more non-Black residents move into the area. Baldwin Hills was visited by tragedy yet again in July 1985, when a fire destroyed 47 homes in the neighborhood. In the early 20th century, these lawless, uninhabited hills were best known for the rough and tumble oil derricks that punctured the land, and conflicts between various syndicates to control the oil fields. With its reputation as a dump site for a notorious murder, peat fires, and a narcotics ring meet-up place, the area appears to have had a wild side.

Barney had taken over Dance Mania from Jesse Saunders when the latter moved to Los Angeles, and he’d serve as an “idea man” for Mitchell’s later work.
